Football is full of energy, passion, scary plays, and drama. Something I love about the sport, and wanted to highlight in an entertaining way. Football takes place in one of the most exciting seasons: Spooky Season! As a new concept for sports design, this project explores the idea of combining halloween imagery with NFL Football footage to enhance the fun spontaneity and energy of the sport. For this task, I decided to tackle it highlighting the streaming service Amazon Prime due to them being a fairly new platform to the NFL scene and them stating in a brief that they are open to exploring new concepts in sports. This project from the sound editing to footage compositing and animation was done 100% by me in a short span. It was a challenge, but one I enjoyed!

TIMELINE: 2.5 WEEKS

PROGRAMS: AE, ProCreate, ProTools, and Premiere Pro

Some Snippets

Each of these frames artistic overlays are frame by frame animation done in procreate at the full 24.9 frame per second. I kept it this speed as that is the speed football is recorded at and I wanted to keep it in tandem with the pacing of the game. Thus, a lot of frames were required in the process of creating these stills. (The skeleton one alone was 32 frames!) Before animating the frame by frame assets though, I first went through hours of football footage to find the perfect snippets to process and edit for my project. After finding the footage, I cut and color corrected the video files in Premiere pro then sent over to AE for positioning. After positioning the footage, I got to work on frame by framing the assets I had in mind for the different characters in my piece. It took me just a little over a week to get the frame by frame done.

Sound Design Process

For this project, I did the sound design in ProTools. The first part I did was determine the beat. I found this halloween trap mix on youtube by the artist DJ Kontrol, and edited it using the technique of intercutting to have the beats matching the different moments/transitions in the animation. I then overlaid the music with my halloween sound effects (Reverb sounds added on as either insert or processed in AudioSuite for a spooky feel) that matched the visual I created. The announcer sound effects I found after going through hours of football footage and listening for fun lines to add into my piece that added to the charm and energy of the piece. Last but not least, for a finishing touch, I added the classic “Let’s Ride” that is one of the classic audio snippets of the 2022-23 NFL season.

*On October 20th 2022 I posted my Amazon Post and tagged amazon to get some traction on the piece and it was shared multiple times by friends and colleagues who dmd them. It seems Amazon really liked the piece as they posted a similar design 11 days later on October 31st 2022.
