Made through a bunch of fake blood and real sweat, this project explores the scandalous vibes of the Theranos Blood Testing Scandal. Filmed, color corrected, and edited within a tight deadline with some editing and filming help from my partner Hannah Ford, this project was a deep exploration into creating a piece that aligns with the greedy, dark, scientific atmosphere generated within Hulu’s series “The Dropout” that highlights the downfall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company.

TIMELINE: 1 WEEK (From concept to finish)

Programs: After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Pro Tools

Process

Word Brainstorm

The first step I took before I pitched this idea to my partner, was to create a list of all the words that came to mind after watching The Dropout. I wanted to figure out what imagery would work well to set the tone for the show without giving too much away. Then from there, I composed a shot list that I had in mind on how to incorporate this imagery in a visually impactful way. Then after having a clear vision, I went forward in pitching the idea to my partner who was able to add on to the list from what I pitched allowing the ideas to flourish better in coming to life!

Mood Board

To fully explore the title sequence that fits with the show, I created a mood board combining Theranos imagery, Elizabeth Holmes imagery, The Dropout imagery, and blood test images to create a vibe of what was needed to help create a nicely articulated short title sequence for the show.

Every shot in this project was shot by my partner and I, even the break shots! The shots of the broken tape recorder (done to represent the fact that Holmes was unhappy to be caught and deposed of her crimes) and the shattered wine glass were done at a local breakroom in Savannah to ensure safety breaking glass and products. Down below, you can find footage of broken glass that we did not end up using.
